Reid among 5 NFL coaches sacked in firing frenzy

By lunchtime Monday, five NFL coaches were looking for work.

With the regular season ending the day before, the firings came at a furious clip and within a span of 90 minutes the following were sacked: Andy Reid in Philadelphia, Lovie Smith in Chicago, Pat Shurmur in Cleveland, Romeo Crennel in Kansas City and Chan Gailey in Buffalo,

Though he also had a losing record, New York Jets coach Rex Ryan held onto his job while general manager Mike Tannenbaum was let go. Jacksonville fired its GM, Gene Smith. And the Browns made it a clean sweep, dismissing GM Tom Heckert along with Shurmur.

Reid was the longest tenured of the coaches, removed after 14 seasons and a Super Bowl appearance in 2005 ? a loss to New England.

Smith spent nine seasons with the Bears, leading them to the Super Bowl in 2006 ? a loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

Gailey was dumped after three seasons with the Bills; Shurmur after two; and Crennel had one full season with the Chiefs.

Reid took over a 3-13 team in 1999, drafted Donovan McNabb with the No. 2 overall pick and quickly turned the franchise into a title contender.

He is the winningest coach in club history and led them to a run of four straight NFC championship games, a streak that ended with a trip to the NFL title game. But the team hasn't won a playoff game since 2008 and after last season's 8-8 finish, owner Jeffrey Lurie said he was looking for improvement this year. Instead, it was even worse. The Eagles finished 4-12.

Shurmur went 9-23 in his two seasons with the Browns, who will embark on yet another offseason of change ? the only constant in more than a decade of futility. Cleveland has lost at least 11 games in each of the past five seasons and made the playoffs just once since returning to the NFL as an expansion team in 1999.

Crennel took over with three games left in the 2011 season after GM Scott Pioli fired Todd Haley. Kansas City will have the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft as a result of having one of the worst seasons in its 53-year history. The only other time the Chiefs finished 2-14 was 2008, the year before Pioli was hired.

Gailey, the former Dallas Cowboys coach, compiled a 16-32 record in his three seasons in Buffalo, never doing better than 6-10.

Smith and the Bears went 10-6 this season and just missed a playoff spot. But Chicago started 7-1 this year and has struggled to put together a productive offense throughout Smith's tenure. His record was 81-63 with the Bears.

49ers win NFC West with 27-13 win over Arizona

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Michael Crabtree's career day and dazzling catch-making display sent the San Francisco 49ers to another NFC West crown and into the playoffs with some much-needed momentum.

Crabtree caught touchdown passes of 49 and 7 yards and finished with a career-high 172 yards, leading the 49ers to a 27-13 victory against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday after a slow start. To make things even better, they also get a first-round bye.

Colin Kaepernick threw for a career-best 276 yards and two TDs as the Niners (11-4-1) did their part to control the postseason picture ? then waited all of about 15 minutes to watch Minnesota beat Green Bay and give San Francisco the NFC's No. 2 seed and a week off before hosting a divisional playoff game.

Frank Gore ran for a 2-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter for his franchise-best 51st touchdown rushing, breaking a tie with mentor Roger Craig and the late Hall of Famer Joe Perry.

Brian Hoyer went 19 of 34 for 225 yards and a late TD toss in his first career NFL start as Arizona's fourth quarterback. The Cardinals (5-11) lost for the 11th time in their last 12 games in what might have been Ken Whisenhunt's final game as coach.

Crabtree's outstanding outing was the best by a 49ers receiver since Terrell Owens' 166-yard performance on Nov. 25, 2002, against Philadelphia.

Crabtree caught a 31-yard pass to set up his team-leading eighth TD reception on the next play. The sequence put him over 1,000 yards, giving San Francisco its first 1,000-yard receiver since T.O. in 2003.

The next series, Crabtree made a pretty, one-handed grab with his right hand along the left sideline on third-and-11 for a 19-yard gain and first down.

He made a 14-yard catch on fourth down late in the third, and later converted another fourth down with a reception of 7 yards.

What a boost for an injury-depleted receiving corps missing Mario Manningham for the rest of the season because of a knee injury and had tight end Vernon Davis limited a week after sustaining a concussion.

Struggling San Francisco kicker David Akers missed wide left on a 44-yard field goal attempt midway through the second quarter, then did it again with nearly the same kick ? from 40 yards this time ? 24 seconds before halftime. Akers put his hands on his knees and closed his eyes in frustration as boos rained down from the sellout crowd at Candlestick Park.

He missed for the fourth time in his last eight spanning three games and 13th time in 40 tries after setting an NFL single-season record with 44 in 52 attempts. He had a 21-yard try blocked in the loss at Seattle and returned by Richard Sherman for a 90-yard touchdown.

But Akers bounced back by nailing one from 43 yards early in the second half yet was later clipped in his left, kicking foot by Arizona's Justin Bethel. He stayed in the game, then booted a 26-yard field goal with just more than 9 minutes remaining.

Hoyer exhibited poise in the early moments. He completed 7 of his first 13 passes and three straight ? for 7, 15 and 12 yards ? during one drive as Arizona took a 3-0 lead on Jay Feely's 35-yard field goal late in the first quarter. Feely added a 31-yarder early in the second to make it 6-0.

The Cardinals outgained the 49ers 129-15 in total yards in the opening quarter and held San Francisco without a first down.

But that didn't last long.

The Cardinals ended a six-game stretch without a touchdown passing when Hoyer hit Michael Floyd on a late 37-yard touchdown pass to end a stretch of six games without a TD in the air.

The Cardinals pounded the ball toward the right side of San Francisco's defensive line where Pro Bowler Justin Smith had been stout against the run all season before getting hurt two weeks ago.

But Hoyer, who replaced the benched Ryan Lindley in last week's 28-13 home loss to the Bears, couldn't make enough plays against San Francisco's stingy defense.

Former starting quarterback Alex Smith made what could have been his final appearance in a 49ers uniform when he entered the game with 5:57 to go ? playing to chants of "Let's Go, Alex!" and "Alex! Alex!"

African Union chief heads to C.A.R.

The head of the African Union arrived in the Central African Republic Sunday as tensions mounted between the government and rebels there, an official said.

Benin President Thomas Boni Yayi, who chairs the regional body, met with the Central African Republic's president, said Margaret Vogt, a U.N. special representative.

The talks come amid lingering unrest in the inland African nation.

Rebels, angry with the government, have staged attacks in recent days. And the volatile situation has spurred demonstrations in Bangui, the country's capital and largest city.

Government authorities set an 8 p.m. (2 p.m. ET) curfew Sunday, said Josue Binoua, the minister of territorial administration and decentralization.

Rebels and government officials are scheduled to meet early this week for talks in Gabon, on Africa's western coast, Binoua said. He did not specify the date when the discussions would begin.

Amid fears of more violence, officials from various nations take steps to protect their citizens and interests in the Central African Republic.

France deployed 180 troops from Gabon to Bangui overnight to protect French citizens in the Central African Republic's capital, said Col. Thierry Burkhard, a spokesman for France's defense ministry.

U.S. President Barack Obama wrote a letter Saturday to Congress informing them that about 50 U.S. troops were sent to Chad on Thursday "to support the evacuation of U.S. embassy personnel and U.S. citizens from the Central African Republic."

Rebels were reported earlier last week to be about 190 miles from Bangui. But there's been a lull in rebel attacks in recent days.

Experts: Trained police needed for school security

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The student's attack began with a shotgun blast through the windows of a California high school. Rich Agundez, the El Cajon policeman assigned to the school, felt his mind shift into overdrive.

People yelled at him amid the chaos but he didn't hear. He experienced "a tunnel vision of concentration."

While two teachers and three students were injured when the glass shattered in the 2001 attack on Granite Hills High School, Agundez confronted the assailant and wounded him before he could get inside the school and use his second weapon, a handgun.

The National Rifle Association's response to a Connecticut school massacre envisions, in part, having trained, armed volunteers in every school in America. But Agundez, school safety experts and school board members say there's a huge difference between a trained law enforcement officer who becomes part of the school family ? and a guard with a gun.

The NRA's proposal has sparked a debate across the country as gun control rises once again as a national issue. President Barack Obama promised to present a plan in January to confront gun violence in the aftermath of the killing of 20 Sandy Hook Elementary School students and six teachers in Newtown, Conn.

Agundez said what happened before the shooting in the San Diego County school should frame the debate over the NRA's proposal.

With a shooting at another county school just weeks before, Agundez had trained the staff in how to lock down the school, assigned evacuation points, instructed teachers to lock doors, close curtains and turn off the lights. He even told them computers should be used where possible to communicate, to lessen the chaos.

And his training? A former SWAT team member, Agundez' preparation placed him in simulated stressful situations and taught him to evade a shooter's bullets. And the kids in the school knew to follow his advice because they knew him. He spoke in their classrooms and counseled them when they came to him with problems.

In the wake of the Sandy Hook massacre, school boards, administrators, teachers and parents are reviewing their security measures.

School security officers can range from the best-trained police officers to unarmed private guards. Some big-city districts with gang problems and crime formed their own police agencies years ago. Others, after the murder of 13 people at Columbine High School in 1999, started joint agreements with local police departments to have officers assigned to schools ? even though that was no guarantee of preventing violence. A trained police officer at Columbine confronted one of two shooters but couldn't prevent the death of 13 people.

"Our association would be uncomfortable with volunteers," said Mo Canady, executive director of the National Association of School Resource Officers ? whose members are mostly trained law enforcement officers who "become part of the school family.'"

Canady questioned how police officers responding to reports of a shooter would know whether the person with a gun is a volunteer or the assailant.

Former Rep. Asa Hutchinson, who also was a top Homeland Security official and will head the NRA effort, said the program will have two key elements.

One is a model security plan "based on the latest, most up-to-date technical information from the foremost experts in their fields." Each school could tweak the plan to its own circumstances, and "armed, trained, qualified school security personnel will be but one element."

The second element may prove the more controversial because, to avoid massive funding for local authorities, it would use volunteers. Hutchinson said in his home state of Arkansas, his son was a volunteer with a local group "Watchdog Dads," who volunteered at schools to patrol playgrounds and provide added security.

He said retired police officers, former members of the military or rescue personnel would be among those likely to volunteer.

There's even debate over whether anyone should have a gun in a school, even a trained law enforcement officer.

"In general teachers don't want guns in schools period," said Dennis Van Roekel, president of the National Education Association, one of the two large unions representing teachers. He added that one size does not fit all districts and said the union has supported schools that wanted a trained officer. Most teachers, he said, do not want to be armed themselves.

"It's a school. It's not a place where guns should be," he commented.

The security situation around the country is mixed.

?Maricopa County, Ariz., Sheriff Joe Arpaio says he has the authority to mobilize private citizens to fight crime and plans to post armed private posse members around the perimeter of schools. He said he hasn't spoken to specific school districts and doesn't plan to have the citizen posse members inside the buildings.

?The Snohomish School District north of Seattle got rid of its school officers because of the expense.

?The Las Vegas-based Clark County School District has its own police department and places armed officers in and around its 49 high school campuses. Officers patrol outside elementary and middle schools. The Washoe County School District in Nevada also has a police force, but it was only about a decade ago that the officers were authorized to carry guns on campus.

?In Milwaukee, a dozen city police officers cover the school district but spend most of their time in seven of the 25 high schools. In Madison, Wis., an armed police officer has worked in each of the district's four high schools since the mid-1990s.

?For the last five years, an armed police officer has worked in each of the two high schools and three middle schools in Champaign, Ill. Board of Education member Kristine Chalifoux said there are no plans to increase security, adding, "I don't want our country to become an armed police state."

?A Utah group is offering free concealed-weapons permit training for teachers as a result of the Connecticut shootings. Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne proposed a plan to allow one educator in each school to carry a gun.

Ed Massey, vice chairman of the Boone County, Ky., school board and president of the National School Boards Association, said his district has nine trained law enforcement officers for 23 schools and "would love to have one in every school."

"They bring a sense of security and have done tremendous work in deterring problems in school," he said. "The number of expulsions have dramatically decreased. We used to have 15 or 20 a year. Now we have one or two in the last three years."

An officer, he said, "is not just a hired gun. They have an office in the school. They are trained in crisis management, handling mass casualties and medical emergencies."

He said a poster given out by the local sheriff's department shows one of the officers and talks about literacy and reading.

Kenneth Trump, president of the National School Safety and Security Services consulting firm, said having trained officers in schools is "more of a prevention program than a reactive program if you have the right officers who want to work with kids."

But he also criticized a drop in funding for school security, saying, "Congress and the last two administrations have chipped away to the point of elimination of every program for school security and emergency planning."

Dr. Ronald Stephens, executive director of the National School Safety Center that provides training to schools, said the NRA's suggestion of using volunteers "is a whole new concept of school safety." He questioned whether the NRA wants to bring the best sharpshooters on campus.

"How is that going to create a positive atmosphere for young people?" he asked. "How does that work on the prevention side?"

Agundez, 52, who retired as a policeman in 2010, learned shortly before his retirement just how much his trained reaction to a shooter affected students at Granite Hills High.

He was writing a traffic ticket and the driver's whole body started shaking. He had been a student that day nine years earlier.

"He gave me a hug," Agundez recalled. "He said 'I always wanted to thank you.' You saved our lives."

HEADS UP TO ANYONE DOING A NON-HUMAN MERMAID HUNTER OR MERMAID CHARACTER: I would like two different descriptions for appearances and two different images(One of the human form, one of the non-human form). For Mermaids, the human form would look the same as mermaid, without the tail and fin ears. The mermaid hunter is really up to the creator. Sorry that's not in the application. >_< I'll add it here in a minute.

I'm afraid it might take me a little over 24 hours to get her finished and in, but I shouldn't take more than possibly two days. If you're reserving the eldest princess, Hazezon, then you and I will need to figure out what age we'll have them. I put down seventeen but was thinking eighteen, whichever you want I suppose.

Depending on whether or not we are allowed to reserve them, that is.

Also, if that is the case, is it possible I could have my character be one of the merpeople who can walk on land easier than most? It would be easier for her as a guard.

wise self improvement | self improvement made easy: Leaders Must ...

If you want to serve as a leader, then actually act like one, and be a leader. That means a leader must step forward while others stand on the sideline. Judge someone as a leader not by what they do regarding popular programs and ideas. Rather they must be judged by whether or not they stand up for what they believe, and take what are often difficult or challenging positions. Certainly it is challenging and even stressful at times to stand alone on principle, if you really believe in something. Leadership is about inner strength and fortitude, and doing and saying what needs to be do e, even if it may at times be unpopular or out of fashion.

1. I recall serving for nearly a decade, many years ago, as the Treasurer of a non profit. it seemed obvious to me that this particular organization, if it did not take steps to address putting their financial house in order, would soon be facing the prospect of insolvency. Although I was often overwhelmingly opposed, I continued to chastise, coerce, and demand that the Board acted responsibly. Years later, almost every one of my proposals was enacted, and although waiting as long as they did had a negative overall compacted fiscal and financial impact, the fact that they eventually did what was needed guaranteed the road to solvency and relevance. The interesting aspect, however, is that the very same people who openly bad mouthed me, and derided my point of view, eventually championed the battle, and were more than glad to take full credit for the accomplishment. However, the important thing is not who got the credit, but that what needed to get done, did.

2. Leadership must never be about one's ego or popularity. Rather, it is about webbing effectively, and bringing an organization to achieve and perform to its potential, and to accomplish worthwhile missions. Great leaders always begin with a vital vision, and that vision always acts to motivate them to commit to a greater extent, try harder, care more, and make more efforts to include others in the quest. The true mark of a great leader is not only getting followers to care, but developing the ones with the most potential, to become future true leaders.

It all begins with a leader's adherence to a basic principle or tenet, and using that to bring himself to bravely take a stand, when others resist. All organizations benefit from great leadership.

Record set in solar cell efficiency - with light of a thousand suns

19 hrs.

Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy have created a solar cell that can convert 44 percent of sunlight hitting it into electrical energy, setting a new record for solar cell?efficiency. But it was only achieved by multiplying the power of the sun by nearly 1,000.

The ongoing research is being done at the III-V Multijunction Photovoltaics group at the Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory, where the previous record of 43.5 percent was set. So while it's not a huge leap in efficiency, it's still a record.

The researchers achieve these high efficiencies by stacking multiple "junctions" into a single solar cell, each of which absorbs light at a slightly different wavelength. The "III-IV" in the name refers to the fact that the elements used?come from the third and fifth columns of the periodic table.

A new material with many desirable properties was?discovered by accident (gallium arsenide diluted with nitrogen), but proved extremely difficult to manufacture. Researchers needed to use a technique called molecular beam epitaxy to minimize impurities in the material ? but no one in the world could do it.

Solar Junction, a company started by researchers from Stanford University, decided to take up the challenge. With a few million dollars in funding, Solar Junction and NREL managed to make the new process work. The result was the "SJ3" cell, which has been breaking records ever since.

The catch is that it's not like a traditional solar cell, which simply receives sunlight on its surface and creates a modest charge from the photons. The SJ3 cell requires the power of the sun to be multiplied by special lenses, creating a beam of light hundreds of times brighter than ordinary sunlight.

In this kind of system, the power is measured in "suns": A beam 10?times brighter than the sun would be described simply as 10 suns. And?the previous efficiency record was set by a lens system that created 415 suns. The latest record was set using 947 suns.

Naturally, one may wonder if such a design is practical ? after all, how often does the sun shine a thousand times brighter than normal? But the lenses actually take normal sunlight that might have hit in a diffuse way on normal cells and concentrate it onto the more efficient SJ3 cell. So in the end it's just using the same area of sunlight in a different way.

The NREL emphasized in the report describing the record that the SJ3 design can easily replace solar systems used in satellites and other space-bound machines ? but it's lighter and more efficient, reducing rocket load and allowing for more onboard electronics.

What's next? Tweaking the design to include a germanium layer used previously could raise efficiency as high as 50 percent ? definitely?a major landmark in solar power, if researchers?can achieve it, although applying it to everyday power needs is another project?altogether.

Information on other research being done by the NREL, including other forms of solar cells and systems, can be found at their webpage. More technical details about the SJ3 cell are in?the NREL article describing the record.

Successful Fantasy Golf Challenge 2012 season goes into next season with full momentum

The 2012 fantasy golf season came to an end after a highly successful year. With more than a two hundred percent increase in the total number of players as compared to the 2011 season, the 2012 season was deemed as a major success.

As the new season is about to start, the Golf Channel is carrying on with the same momentum going into the next season.

The 2013 game has got more catch to it as there are prizes that will be distributed on a weekly basis, and as a new introduction to the game, five major championships will be included in the 2013 season.

The registration for the 2013 season is now open. One can get registered for free by logging on to GolfChannel.com/Fantasy. The Hyundai Tour of Champions is just around the corner, as it starts during the first week of January.

The fans have got the chance to join in as part of a league or as an individual who plays against other golf enthusiasts all over the country.

As mentioned earlier, there will be five major championships included in the fantasy challenge.

The Kraft Nabisco Championship, The U.S. Women?s Open, the RICOH Women?s British Open, the Evian Masters and the Wegmans LPGA Championship.

The challenge will be including the top European Tour events.

The fantasy challenge is a great activity for the fans as it involves them more in the sport and can give out their opinions to win lucrative prizes as well.

Golf is not one of the most popular sports in the world. Other team sports rein the sporting world, but such activities provide an excellent platform for the fans to participate in the sport.

Ouya developer kits are shipping, $99 Android game console ...

The makers of the Ouya video game console have started shipping developer kits to folks who paid $699 or more during the team?s successful Kickstarter campaign. The company plans to start shipping Ouya units to customers early in 2013, with the video game console selling for about $99 plus shipping.

ouya

SlashGear reports the first units should begin arriving this week.

The Ouya game console is a small box with an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, WiFi, Bluetooth, a USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet, and HDMI ports.

It runs Google Android software, but it?s not a phone or a tablet. Instead the Ouya console is designed to be plugged into your television so you can play games on the big screen. It also includes a wireless game controller, a game store, and more.

The developer consoles come with two controllers ? but their main appeal is that they?re shipping a few months ahead of the final units, which should give game developers (or serious enthusiasts) a chance to try out the device before it?s available to the general public, and adapt games to run on the platform.

While there?s no shortage of video game consoles for the living room, the developers of the Ouya project want to lower the barriers to entry for independent game developers. Basically, if you can create a game that runs on Android, it can run on Ouya ? you don?t need to go through the hassle of signing with a game publisher, packaging the title on a disc and distributing it to game stores.

On the other hand, the Ouya is expected to ship to regular customers in early 2013 with hardware that was state of the art in early 2012. While you can still write some pretty nifty games for the Tegra 3 processor, Samsung and Qualcomm are already offering mobile processors with significantly more graphics power, and NVIDIA is expected to launch a Tegra 4 chip soon.

Will the Ouya feel dated by the time it finally arrives? Then again? with a $99 price tag, does it really matter?

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words ? Small Business Marketing ...

MyModernWeb on Pinterest

One oft-overlooked social media platform that?s great for marketing a small business is Pinterest. At first glance, Pinterest simply looks like a fun, virtual pin board to collect and share photos and ideas. In actuality, Pinterest can be used as a marketing tool for your business.

Using Pinterest for Business

Pinterest is ideal for businesses that sell products. The most obvious way to use Pinterest to market your business is to upload pictures of your products. You should also pin photos that coincide with the image you?re trying to present. For example, if you?re selling clothing with a fresh, clean look, then the photos you share on your account should be fresh and clean, too. That means that the photos can go beyond the frame of clothing and include decorating and even food photos.

Get Clients Involved

Another way to use Pinterest to market your business is to interact with your customers. Does your company sell unique accessories? Ask your customers to pin photos of themselves wearing the jewelry. The more these photos are shared, the farther your business reach.

Keep it Fresh

Staying current is key to effectively using Pinterest as a marketing tool. Even if your business hasn?t had any new products developed lately, you can still be active on your Pinterest account. Does your company sell socks? Pin photos of pants and shoes that would look great with unique, funky socks. This is a great way to refresh your line of products and catch the eye of potential customers.

Get Creative

Naming your boards is a key component to being successful on Pinterest. Your first step is to look at other users? board names. Your second step is to not name any of your boards after them. Unique names will stand out from the crowd. The more crazy, unusual and unexpected, the better.

Use Quality Pictures

Also, whatever you do, make sure to only post high-quality images. Blurred photos and crummy shots won?t cut it. Pinterest is an image-based website and your images have to be up to par. Also, keep in mind the pinners point of view. Will the image peek their curiosity enough to repin it, follow your board or visit your website? Does the image make them feel something? What is the image saying to them? Images are very powerful in marketing. Choose uniques images that will encourage pinners to repin and possible even purchase!

What?s Next?

Pinterest can be an affordable and effective means of advertising for small businesses. We encourage you to get in there, have fun, see what other businesses similar to yours is doing, and pin away!

MyModernWeb offers a service that includes setting up a Pinterest account for your business?(as well as Facebook, Google+, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts) and pinning the images of the custom written blog posts to your boards! 10. California. The Golden State probably deserves a lifetime achievement Lump of Coal Award for its inability to balance its budgets, its government-by-initiative, and its endless bouts of fiscal wishful thinking. What, that bump in capital gains tax revenue won?t go on forever?

9. President Obama for proposing to pay for major corporate tax reform by eliminating a handful of minor tax preferences, including subsides for the purchase of corporate jets. Nothing wrong with corporate reform or with ditching the airplane subsidy. The problem is Obama had already pledged to use the same tax break to help reduce the deficit. Physics question: Can a jet flying at the speed of light pay for two things at once?

8. Congress? decades-long inability to require online retailers to collect sales taxes, just as their bricks-and-mortar competitors must. C?mon gang, even Amazon says it will start collecting sales taxes for online sales. Maybe lawmakers are waiting for free shipping.

The Music Club, 2012

Photograph by Simone Joyner/Getty Images.

Thanks to all for the insight and recommendations; I think the list of albums (and books) I now need to check out is long enough to keep me busy until whenever it is that we?ve rescheduled Doomsday. (I seem to recall a Mayan prophecy mentioning Justin Bieber?s 21stbirthday?) Having a lovely holiday, but happy to take a break from carousing with the fam and making a yule log (OK, eating a yule log,) to try and tie a ribbon on some final thoughts.

Jody, perhaps 2013 will be the year we see #WADS (We All Die Someday) trend worldwide on Twitter (or at least adorn a hit T-shirt), but either way, when you mentioned #YOLO?s photonegative sentiment, my mind went immediately to Angel Olsen. She?s a Missouri-born, Chicago-based songwriter who?s been a mainstay in Bonnie ?Prince? Billy?s occasionally beret?d backing band The Cairo Gang, but this year she made good on the promise of her debut solo EP Strange Cacti and proved herself to be a formidable and unique songwriting talent in her own right. Her 2012 record Half Way Home is absolutely bewitching. Her voice has this quivery power that reminds me of Linda Perhacs or Buffy Sainte-Marie, but vocally she?s more of a Roy Orbison-style crooner than a folkie. Her songs are spirituals interrupted with dark blurts of mortality; in the middle of what?s ostensibly a love song, she?ll sneak a disarming line like, ?I thought this time last year I?d be dead/ It?s quite strange the thoughts that pop into your head/ When you?re busy smiling, surrounded by your closest of friends.? #WADS indeed.

Olsen also has a knack for giving her songs an intimate, confessional feel but while blowing their emotions up to a cosmic scale. The centerpiece of the record is ?Lonely Universe,? a wrenching seven-and-a-half minute narrative about watching the life slip from the body of someone you love. ?Goodbye, sweet mother earth,? she sings. ?Without you, I?m a lonely universe.? Like San Francisco?s Jessica Pratt?a young talent with a crackling, old-soul voice, who released a melodious whisper of a self-titled debut this year?Olsen is someone who?s internalized the eccentric aesthetic of what we were calling ?freak folk? a few years back, and found a way to express it in a way that seems not self-consciously kitschy but deeply, harrowingly personal.

And hey, speaking of cosmic despair, 2012 will be forever marred in my memory as the year I actually had to engage with the phrase ?legitimate rape,? thanks to Todd Aiken and the Foot-in-Mouth Boys (which would either be a great or terrible name for a riot grrrl revival band). As Jason noted, we?re ?at war in the United States over whether we should honor women?s reproductive and economic rights.? And as troubling as this was has been for a lot of women, I did find some kind of relief in the music that?whether directly or indirectly?took up this particular cause. This fall, upstart Brooklyn rapper Angel Haze ?the commanding video for ?New York? is a good crash course for the uninitiated?released a mixtape featuring ?Cleaning Out My Closet,? a song that revealed in graphic, unflinching detail the sexual abuse she suffered as a child. It?s hard to listen to?but that?s the point. ?Disgusting, right?? she spits, ?Now let the feeling ring through your guts.? In a year when elected officials were spouting vague euphemisms and flat-out lies about the realities of sexual abuse in this country, the song?s documentarian grit felt that much more powerful. And beneath the airy, cotton candy ambiance of Grimes? ?Oblivion,? lurked another commentary on sexual violence. In a recent interview with Spin, Claire Boucher said that the song is about the fear and paranoia some women feel ?going into this masculine world associated with sexual assault.? The song?s got a hypnotic pop heartbeat, but this interview put a new, chilling cast over its refrain, ?See you in the dark night.? According to my iTunes playcount, I listened to ?Oblivion? more than any other song this year (it was also Pitchfork?s No. 1 song of 2012), but when I put it on after reading this interview, I felt like I was hearing it for the first time. I?m excited to see what?s ahead for both Angel Haze and Grimes?in their music and in the stance they take in interviews, they?re seizing important ground in their respective genres, both of which are still plagued by a lot of anti-feminine stereotypes. Their presence is powerful, and I hope it?ll ripple out. Condescending sound guys, misogyny in electronic music and hip-hop, cringe-inducing terms like ?femcee? and ?feminem?? As the saying goes, the female body has ways to shut that whole thing down.

Unlike some people, I get pretty excited when I get books for Christmas, and the best thing waiting for me under the tree this year was Jacqueline Warwick?s Girl Groups, Girl Culture: Popular Music and Identity in the 1960s (thanks Mom!). Reading through the introduction this morning, I was particularly struck by Warwick?s observation, ?If we accept the idea that girlness exists as a social construct and concur with Mary Russo that ?to put on femininity with a vengeance suggests the power of taking it off,? then it becomes possible to understand girl group songs as potent rather than simply passive and reactionary.? She?s writing here about The Supremes, The Crystals, and The Ronettes, but I heard so much music this year that fits into?and updates?this theory, from Kitty Pryde?s viral hit ?okay cupid,? to the girl-talkin? bridge of ?We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,? to the toxic bubblegum of one of my favorite singles of the year, Nicki Minaj and Cassie?s ?The Boys.? Jody, in last year?s Music Club you put forth a Take Care conspiracy theory??there?s no way Drake is having such a bad time banging groupies.? Cassie, it seems, agrees. Her snide chorus on ?The Boys???You get high, fuck a bunch of girls, and then cry on top of the world??sounds like a pretty pointed Drake diss to my ears, or maybe just a female response to the cloud of ennui drifting over a large swath of the hip-hop world right now. ?The Boys? has not only some of my favorite 2012 Minaj verses (in a year when it was particularly hard to choose on that front), but also one of the best videos of the year. If Beyonce and Gaga?s ?Telephone? video was Generation GIF?s Thelma & Louise, ?The Boys? feels like the candy-colored feminist utopia we all know they went to instead of heaven right after the credits rolled.

And with that, time to drive this thing right off the (fiscal?) cliff and bid the Club a fond farewell. Wishing you all a happy, safe, and tuneful 2013. It was a pleasure swapping observations with you all; would love to do it again sometime. Call me, maybe?
