HTC Desire X announced: Android 4.0 on a 4-inch Super LCD screen

HTC is keeping a low profile at IFA 2012 this week but it does have at least one phone to reveal to the throng of tech journalists and writers making their way around Berlin, the Desire X (formerly Proto). It's a humbler new handset for the Taiwanese manufacturer and one whose outer hardware has already toured China. It's now been mildly adjusted (that is, improved) with one of Qualcomm's lower-end Snapdragon S4 processors, clocked at 1GHz, while it keeps that 4-inch touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera, Beats Audio integration and 4GB of storage we saw earlier. There's also an extra 25 gigs of free cloud storage courtesy of Dropbox, while the camera packs the same capabilities as One series devices including HDR capture, continuous shooting and the ability to capture video and stills at the same time. The device will launch across as-yet unconfirmed countries in Europe and Asia starting next month -- and we'll have a hands-on for you later today.

Tribal members tune in to London Olympic Games | The Seminole ...

By Kathryn Stolarz

The 2012 London Olympics captivated much of the world?s attention, and Seminoles were no exception.

Chairman James E. Billie was among many Tribal members who tuned in to catch the action from July 27 to Aug. 12. About 10,500 athletes from 204 countries competed for 2,100 medals on the world?s biggest stage ? including several Native Americans.

Chairman Billie told assistant Norman Bowers that he enjoyed watching the games with son Eecho Billie. The Chairman was impressed to see U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps break the world record for most Olympic medals earned, Bowers said.

Bowers, who participates in several sports around the reservation, said he kept his TV on the games throughout the day and night to cheer for the U.S.

?For the Olympics, regardless of race, color or whatever, you can come together and be happy for your team,? he said. ?Hopefully our kids will watch it and that they draw some inspiration from that.?

Bowers was happy to learn that several Native Americans competed in this year?s games, including Mary Killman, of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation of Oklahoma; Mary Spencer, a First Nation Ojibway; Tumuaialii Anae, a Native Hawaiian; and Adrienne Lyle, of the Cherokee Nation. Spencer competed for Canada and the rest represented the U.S.

?I wish one of them was one of our own Tribal members,? he said, ?but as long as it?s a Native American?I?d definitely hope they would place.?

Killman placed 11th in the synchronized swimming finals with partner Mariya Koroleva; Spencer made it to the quarterfinals in the inaugural year of women?s middleweight boxing; Anae was the goalie of the gold-winning water polo team; and Lyle placed 35th in her individual event as one of the youngest American dressage riders in equestrian.

While they competed admirably this year, only three Native Americans have medaled in individual events in the past 100 years: Jim Thorpe, Billy Mills and Duke Kahanamoku.

Tribal member Moses Jumper Jr. couldn?t help but think of Thorpe as he watched this year?s Olympics.
?[The Olympics] reminds me of the great athletes, especially like Jim Thorpe,? he said. ?You could probably compare him now today to Michael Phelps because of the magnitude of all the events he did in one sport.?

Thorpe, of the Sac and Fox Tribe, won gold medals in the pentathlon and decathlon in the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, making him one of the greatest Native American athletes of all time. This July, the medals were showcased at the Smithsonian?s National Museum of the American Indian in honor of the 100th anniversary of those games as part of the ?Best in the World: Native Athletes in the Olympics? exhibit. The medals were then brought to London and displayed.

In addition to Thorpe, swimmer Kahanamoku gained international attention for his stellar performances in the Olympics. The Native Hawaiian won an individual gold and a silver in a relay for the U.S. at the 1912 Olympics. He also earned golds in an individual and a relay event in 1920 in Antwerp and a silver in 1924 in Paris.

Forty years later, Mills, of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, won the U.S. a gold medal in the 10,000-meter run at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

The first recorded Native American participation was in the 1904 St. Louis, Mo. Games, where athletes like Black Eagle, Spotted Tail, Snake Eater and Rain in Face competed on the gold-winning Canadian and silver-winning American lacrosse teams.

Jumper, who recently retired from 38 years as the Tribe?s Recreation director, has seen a lot of Tribal athletes in his lifetime, and he hopes they will watch the Olympics and get inspired.

?They?ve got the training and they?ve got the finances to take it beyond what they can do now,? he said. ?We?ve got the facilities today? We?ve got the instructors? The parents need to get them out there.?

Particularly, Jumper thought of the potential of young Tribal gymnasts as he watched the U.S. team take home a gold in the Olympics this year.

?We got a bunch of our little girls who are involved in gymnastics,? he said. ?I hope they can take it further.?

Although Seminoles haven?t yet made names for themselves in the Olympics, Jumper acknowledged that a lot of Tribal members have achieved greatness in their sports, like his cousin David Jumper, who was inducted into the Florida Track and Field Hall of Fame earlier this year.

Another successful Seminole athlete, 2011 EIRA Regional Champion Leanna Billie brought home gold buckles in the first and third rounds of the Ladies Breakaway. Billie, a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, said she watched some of this year?s Olympic diving and volleyball and felt inspired.

?When you watch some of the background stories of what they?ve done to get there, it makes me want to strive more in my events as an athlete,? she said. ?I?m really aiming to be world champion someday, so it?s all going toward that.?

Motorola RAZR M 4G LTE details slip out

1 hr.

On Sept. 5,?Motorola and Verizon are holding an event at which?they're expected to announce the latest RAZR device. Thanks to an anonymous source, the cat's out of the bag about the new smartphone's?details.?

It will apparently be called the Motorola RAZR M 4G LTE.

Engadget's Brad Molen reports that the tech blog's staff has gotten its hands onto some photos of the awkwardly named device, along with its spec sheet.

The RAZR M will have a 4.3-inch qHD (960 x 540) Super AMOLED Advanced display, a dual-core Snapdragon processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB of internal sturage (which can be expanded, thanks to microSD support), an 8MP camera in the rear, a 3MP camera in the front, and NFC?capabilities.

No details about the device's expected price or release date are known at this point, so at least there'll be something new?that we can learn from the Sept. 5 event.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Karen Cioffi Writing and Marketing: The Lazy Way To Be A Great Writer

Monday's are reserved to my own articles, but today I have a valuable article on using hypotext by Dr. John Yeoman. It's definitely worth deviating from my usual posting schedule.
By Dr. John Yeoman

Have you ever yearned for just one simple formula that will help your stories glow with magic and resonate with depth?

If everybody knew the secret, everyone would be a best-selling author - or rather, nobody would, because the formula would be a clich?. So it?s important that only you and I know this. Will you give me your solemn word that you will tell no one what I am about to reveal?

I can see your eyes narrow. Your lips are widening in a sceptical smile. What, you don?t trust me? I feel intensely hurt. After all, I don?t have to tell you. I?m simply trying to pass on to you, in good faith, what I have learned from judging more than 3000 entries at my Writers? Village story contest these past three years.

How come some won cash prizes and others didn?t? Why did many hundreds of stories, otherwise excellent in their craft techniques, fail by a whisker?

The secret is worth the wait.

Trust me, I speak from 42 years of pain as a commercial writer. Yet you?re still not sure about me, are you? I can see you leaning back in your chair, fidgeting. I can almost hear you thinking: ?Will my ?secret? be all puff, no punch line??

And have you read the secret before?

Of course, you have. The ?secret? was in the structure of my last three paragraphs. And you?ve just read those paragraphs!

Please let me explain. A competent story might include sparkling dialogue, strong conflict, well chosen words, firm structure and a satisfying close. Yet still it can fail. Why? It lacks depth. The reader is not emotionally engaged in the ?hypotext?.

Sometimes called a subtext, the hypotext is the story beneath the story. It?s what?s going on, privately, in the characters? thoughts and feelings.

A simple formula

A passage with hypotext classically has three steps:

1.??? What is spoken or done (Dialogue or Action)
2.??? How the key character in the scene thinks and feels about that (their immediate Response)
3.??? What other characters think and feel about it at the time.

A competent author will have no trouble with steps one and two. For example:

??You?re wrong!? I said. Was I about to be charged with murder? I felt my mouth go dry.?

The narrator?s words have been dramatised by body language, reflection and emotional response. That?s fine, so far as it goes. However, few authors segue into step three: show how other characters in the scene are responding to that incident.

??I don?t think so.? Riley leaned forward, thrusting his grubby face within an inch of mine. His breath was a stewpot of garlic. ?You left your fingerprints everywhere.?

The rookie behind him opened his mouth, startled. He looked at Riley then silently shook his head at me. My mind went cold.?

That may not be great writing but it has depth. Now we can feel the interplay of emotions in that room and know or suspect every character?s unspoken thoughts, the hypotext behind the surface narrative.

Read any good story that emotionally engages you and it will be underpinned by some variation of that formula. The better the writer, the more creatively they hide it. (Any passage of dialogue by Kathy Reichs is a master class in creative hypotext.)

Use the formula with any point of view (pov)
If your story uses an omniscient narrator, you can dart in and out of your characters? minds at will. (That said, you might want to conceal their thoughts at times or deliberately mislead the reader.) Then the 3-step formula is a snap:

Action or Dialogue|Emotional Response of Key Character|Emotional Responses of Other Characters

But what if you?re telling the tale from a first-person pov? How can the key character - or reader - plausibly know what another character is thinking? No problem. Let them speculate.

?Detective Riley was due to retire soon, I?d heard. It would crown his career to lock me away. His eyes gleamed like a cat playing with a sparrow. I was innocent. He knew it. And he didn?t care.?

Or the reader can draw inferences from a character?s actions or body language.

?Riley lumbered to the window, turned his back on me and gazed at the Denver skyscape with every appearance of contentment. His body shook. He was laughing.?

Keep that 3-step process going throughout your story and the reader will be emotionally engaged whether or not they like your characters. They will feel the emotional tensions in every scene as if they were physically present. And your story will acquire depth.

That?s all there is to it. Truly. Just don?t tell anyone...

Dr John Yeoman, PhD Creative Writing, judges the Writers? Village story competition and is a tutor in creative writing at a UK university. He has been a successful commercial author for 42 years. A wealth of further ideas for writing fiction that sells can be found in his free 14-part story course at:

Abstract

The article reveals a simple 3-step process that can add instant depth to any scene. While most competent authors know the first two steps, very few understand step 3 - the secret that can turn a mediocre story into a great one.

NBCH Newsletter: Hospitals as Employers Using Wellness ...

Hospitals are emphasizing employee health, in part to give them credibility when they pitch wellness programs to other companies. Hospital executives increasingly agree that employee wellness programs show a hospital can manage population health and can help the facility stand out as an employer in competitive markets. According to Becker's Hospital Review, employee health management is an opportunity for hospitals to put their money where their mouths are. When a large employer asks how a hospital plans to manage population health, a successful organization should be able to illustrate that answer by referring to its own workforce.

Somewhat ironically, some say the hospital industry is a bit behind the curve in its approach to employee health. Other large employers outside of the healthcare industry have aggressively managed the health and wellness of their employees for years. General Mills, Walt Disney Parks & Resorts and Perdue are just a few major corporations with employed CMOs in addition to robust wellness programs including fitness centers, healthy food options, on-site health screenings and annual runs and walks.

With the delivery system reforms coming in the near future, such as ACOs and medical homes, which require input and participation from all stakeholders in a community, employers experienced in wellness program administration and population health management have a unique opportunity to partner with hospitals, both as employers and as providers, to leverage the benefits of a healthy and productive workforce.

Rental Properties in Riverside, CA

Rent Sense: Rental Ownership is a Unique Business
By Neil Fjellestad & Chris De Marcos
FBS Property Management

We have built a healthy San Diego business out of advising independent real estate investors, acquiring and managing rental properties for clients while providing superior housing alternatives for qualified renters. Our business of four decades provides us a practical snapshot of the local economy.

So, what does our experience tell us about the unique rental housing business in San Diego? Here are some highlights that have remained pretty constant over the last year or so -

? With rare exception our renters pay on time every month.? Rent payment has taken its appropriate place as a financial priority as it is clearly their largest household expense.

? Renters want to pay their rent online. They want the privacy, security and convenience of this method. Since providing our renters with this alternative they pay sooner and avoid additional late charges.

? Most of our rental owners are responsive to capital requirements to improve their properties though often forced to defer or accomplish in stages due to personal financial constraints. This is an excellent time to get improvements done on time and for less.

? Our rental owners can?t afford to allow a non-paying renter and they can?t abide extended vacancy. The number of days rented is more important than the rate so a year?s lease is normally required while a substantial premium is required for a month-to-month alternative.

? Most of our clients that are involved with either selling or re-financing become extremely frustrated with the lack of expected results and/or the extension of the time to accomplish.

? The cost and time to accomplish daily routines that require permission and/or cooperation with governmental agencies and public authorities continues to grow and frustrate due to cutbacks in most departments.

? We can see from the employment information provided by renewing and potential renters that most of the jobs lost over the last 3-4 years are gone. Employers have determined other ways to accomplish or greater productivity just requires fewer to get the job done. Other jobs are being created but with different requirements and rewards.

? Small businesses like ours will hire and/or expand cautiously when and if they can control risks (the cost of doing business) while believing that the benefits of growth outweigh the alternatives.

Chrysler's Ram 1500 pickup truck relying on fuel economy, price

(Reuters) - Chrysler Group LLC is betting that better fuel economy and a moderate 1 percent increase in price from last year's models will help its line of 2013 Ram 1500 pickup trucks gain ground on industry leaders from Ford and Chevrolet.

The first redesign since 2009 for the biggest-selling vehicle in the Chrysler lineup has led to a pickup truck with more technology and less weight to go along with the usual pickup truck marketing features of power and towing ability, analysts who have driven the new Ram 1500 said.

The Ram 1500 goes on sale in the United States in October.

The starting price will be $23,585, including destination charges, Chrysler said on Friday. The highest-priced version in the Ram 1500 lineup will be a four-wheel-drive "Laramie Longhorn" crew cab at $48,415, including destination charges.

Chrysler, majority-owned by Italy's Fiat SpA , won't be able to topple the top-selling Ford Motor Co F-150 or the No. 2 General Motors Co Chevrolet Silverado in U.S. sales, but this improved Ram offering may narrow the gap, said analysts.

Edmunds.com director of vehicle testing, Dan Edmunds, said the Ram 1500, even an improved offering, faces an uphill battle against Ford and GM because pickup truck customers have fierce brand loyalty.

"There's definitely some technical benefits and there's some real benefits to the customer," Edmunds said. "They've got a good solid product here. The question is - does it overcome years of brand loyalty? That's hard to say."

Sales of the current 2012 versions of the Ram pickup trucks rose 23 percent this year through July in the United States, U.S. market, compared with a 12 percent rise for Ford F-Series pickup sales and a 3.5 percent gain for the Silverado pickups.

Still, Ford's pickup trucks made up 39.5 percent of the lucrative U.S. full-size pickup truck market, followed by 34.7 percent for GM's versions including the Silverado and the GMC Sierra, and 18.3 percent for Ram pickup trucks.

The GM total combines a 25.2-percent full-size pickup truck share of the Silverado and the 9.5 percent share of the Sierra.

The Ram 1500 "is not going to be a class leader in terms of sales volumes and Chrysler knows that," said Aaron Bragman, autos analyst with IHS Automotive. "They don't even have the capacity to do that. What they are is an alternative.

"Chrysler's goal is not to have a segment leader. It's goal is to make quite a bit of money, as all pickups do, and it does that quite well," said Bragman.

Pickup trucks have wider profit margins than do smaller vehicles, which makes the Ram 1500 an important product for Chrysler. Without Chrysler's profits, almost all from North America, parent Fiat would have shown a loss in the second quarter.

FUEL ECONOMY

Fuel economy, because of higher gasoline prices, has become a bigger factor for consumers when selecting a pickup truck in the past few years, said Bob Hegbloom, director of Ram Trucks for Chrysler.

So the Ram Truck brand and Chrysler will emphasize the version with a 3.6-liter, V6 engine and 8-speed automatic transmission that can get 17 miles per gallon of gasoline in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, Hegbloom said, citing estimates by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The primary model of the Ram 1500 lineup, the 4.7-liter with a V8 engine and a 6-speed automatic will get 14 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway.

The 3.6-liter version of the Ram 1500 with the 8-speed transmission will surpass the upcoming 2013 Ford F-150 pickup truck with a 3.7-liter V6 engine, which gets 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway, according to Ford.

GM's 2013 Chevrolet Silverado has a version of that truck with a 5.3-liter, V8 engine that can get 15 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway.

(Corrects market share figures for U.S. full-size truck market in ninth and 10th paragraphs)

Poll finds swath of voters undecided, unexcited

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Call them maybes.

Two months out from Election Day, nearly a quarter of all registered voters are either undecided about the presidential race or iffy in their support for a candidate, an Associated Press-GfK poll shows.

These voters could well prove decisive in a close contest. And they will be tough nuts for Barack Obama and Mitt Romney to crack.

Just 29 percent of them have a strong interest in the campaign, compared with 51 percent of those who've made up their minds. So no, they won't be hanging on every word coming out of the national political conventions in Tampa, Fla., and Charlotte, N.C., over the next two weeks.

Who are they? These so-called persuadable voters are more often men than women. They are a bit younger than those who've made up their minds. They have less education and income. And they are far less partisan.

A quarter are independent or unaffiliated, while more than a third consider themselves Democrats and a similar share count themselves as Republicans.

They are folks like Eric Avila, a 35-year-old Democrat from Tampa who didn't vote in 2008, has been unemployed since he was laid off from a sales job four years ago and doubts that either candidate will do much to reduce joblessness.

Avila plans to vote this time but finds the campaign rhetoric from both sides grating. "It kind of gets on your nerves after a while," he says, "all of this stuff a person's promising, and it just gets forgotten or buried under a whole bunch of other things."

Take that, Barack and Mitt. Their challenge is to figure out what will shift people like Avila firmly one way or the other.

Ask the persuadables what will be the single most important factor in deciding their vote, and they have a multitude of answers at the ready.

"Whoever runs the cleanest campaign," says one of those surveyed.

"Whoever has the dirtiest ad campaigns on TV," counters another.

A third, who speaks for many, confesses she has "no idea" what will win her over.

How the persuadables ultimately vote could hinge on which issues rise to the top of the campaign.

Romney holds the advantage among these voters on the economy, creating jobs and the federal budget deficit. But on two issues that have recently grabbed the spotlight ? social issues and Medicare ? Obama is the more trusted candidate among these voters.

Neither Obama nor Romney carries much weight with the persuadables, though: Half have an unfavorable opinion of each candidate.

Count Pam Zickert, an independent from Santa Maria, Calif., among those who are undecided and unenthusiastic.

The 62-year-old retiree dislikes Obama, finds Romney "a bit bland" and has no intention of watching the political conventions.

"It's tough to pick a presidential candidate when none of them are inspiring," says Zickert, who voted for Republican John McCain in 2008.

William Galston, an expert on government and politics at the Brookings Institution and a former Clinton administration official, says that because the persuadables are more difficult to win over, Obama and Romney so far have been more focused on firming up support among their base supporters than on cultivating those on the fence.

Romney's selection of conservative darling Rep. Paul Ryan as a running mate was "a decision to place mobilization ahead of persuasion," he says, and Obama's campaign has been systematically targeting the basic building blocks of his winning 2008 coalition: women, Hispanics, younger voters and gays and lesbians among them.

In a polarized political environment and with limited dollars to spend, says Galston, "you can increase your vote total much more per dollar by ginning up the enthusiasm of the people who are already for you."

Still, in a tight race, the persuadables could ultimately make the difference in key swing states, and they can't be ignored. The campaigns may well spend the convention weeks and September firming up their base supporters, then devote the debates and the final weeks of the race to reaching out to more fickle persuadables.

In the AP-GfK survey, taken Aug. 16-20, the 23 percent of registered voters who are considered persuadable included 7 percent who expressed no presidential preference, 7 percent with soft support for Obama and 9 percent with soft support for Romney. The poll involved landline and cellphone interviews with 885 registered voters, including 192 considered persuadable. The margin of sampling error for registered voters was plus or minus 4.1 percent, and for persuadables 8.9 points.

Will the persuadables actually show up and vote? History suggests yes.

In an AP-Yahoo study that interviewed the same people multiple times over the course of the 2008 presidential campaign, 38 percent of registered voters were persuadable in interviews conducted just ahead of that year's conventions. When that same group was interviewed on Election Day, three-fourths said they had voted.

When will the undecideds make up their minds?

In 2004 and 2008, about 10 percent of voters reported they didn't decide until the last week, according to exit polls.

Michelle Woodby, a 36-year-old Republican homemaker from Tecumseh, Mich., says she's been known to wait until the last minute.

With small kids to care for and little time to watch the news, Woodby says she hasn't fully tuned in yet.

So far, Romney's opposition to abortion has won her over, but Woodby says she's still got a lot of studying to do ? and she shows a decided lack of enthusiasm for the job.

"I need to do my homework," she says, "which I dread."

Reserve the Sharp AQUOS SH-10D on NTT DoCoMo from tomorrow, full launch next week

We knew the Sharp AQUOS SH-10D was due to hit NTT DoCoMo at some point this summer, and now we've got the full details. You can reserve yours through the carrier from tomorrow, and the proper launch will take place the following week on August 30th. The device will be available in the three colors you see above, and as it recently passed through the FCC, a trip to the US could also be in the cards. But unfortunately, that orange wallpaper is all too harsh a reminder of one that never ventured outside Japan.

(AP) ? A Mexican appeals judge on Thursday significantly lessened the charge against a Dallas truck driver who says he made a wrong turn into Mexico with a trailer full of ammunition, a decision his attorney said may result in a fine or community service instead of a potential 30-year prison sentence.

Jabin Bogan, who has been held in a maximum security prison in Veracruz since late April, is now only accused of possession of ammunition instead of a heftier trafficking charge that the judge dismissed. The lesser charge carries a maximum of six years in prison if convicted, though Bogan's attorney, Emilio de la Rosa, said he has advised his client to plead no contest so he can push for his release.

"We've given this guy back 30 years of his life," de la Rosa told The Associated Press.

Carlos Spector, Bogan's El Paso, Texas-based attorney, said they will follow de la Rosa's advice so that Bogan can be sentenced within four to six weeks. De la Rosa says he expects Bogan to be sentenced to between two to three years in prison. Mexican law allows for prison terms under four years to be exchanged for community service or a fine, he said.

"This is a positive sign that the reform in the Mexican judicial is working," he said. "They looked at the facts and did not take pressure, because if any case could have been politicized, it was this."

Bogan was arrested less than 100 feet from a giant billboard that reads, "no more weapons." The sign, inaugurated by Mexican President Felipe Calderon two months before Bogan was caught, was made out of seized high caliber rifles and ammunition.

During the inauguration speech, Calderon blamed lax U.S. gun laws for the flow of weapons into Mexico.

"Mexico needs your help... the best way to do that is by stopping the flow of assault weapons into Mexico," Calderon said.

The judge's decision comes two months after testimony from Mexican customs agents contradicted prosecutors' claim that Bogan had 268,000 bullets hidden under the floorboards of his 18-wheeler's trailer when he was arrested April 17 after crossing from West Texas into Juarez. Agents testified in June that Bogan was trying to make a U-turn back into the U.S. when they found the ammunition bundled on top of wooden pallets inside the trailer.

Since then, Bogan's lawyers and family in the U.S. have cried foul, claiming the ammunition charge was too hefty for what they claim was an honest mistake.

"I'm just rejoicing in the moment, to know that my son is soon going to come home," said Aletha Smith, Bogan's mother, at a press conference Thursday afternoon in Dallas.

The 27-year-old Bogan had made two deliveries in El Paso, Texas, and said he was supposed to drive to Phoenix to deliver assault rifle ammunition to a wholesaler there when he got lost. He said he took a wrong exit on the freeway and drove toward the border, where he said a law enforcement official told him to continue driving across the bridge. Bogan said that when he realized he had crossed into Mexico, he attempted to turn back, but the layout of the traffic lanes prevented him from returning without first crossing into the truck inspection area in Juarez.

De La Rosa said surveillance footage taken at the border crossing shows Bogan blocking several lanes of southbound traffic for more than half an hour while trying to maneuver his 18-wheeler back to U.S. soil.

Mexican prosecutors alleged he tried to clandestinely smuggle bullets commonly used by drug cartels. Their request to impose both possession and trafficking charges against Bogan was rejected.

A message left with prosecutors was not immediately returned Thursday.

(AP) ? A group of American artists is using 450 balloons and thousands of light emitting diodes to turn the 2,000-year-old Hadrian's Wall into the world's longest work of art.

New York digital arts collective YesYesNo has been invited by organizers of Britain's Olympic-themed summer arts festival to transform the wall, built by Roman invaders to guard the northern frontier of their empire.

"Connecting Light" will suspend hundreds of white weather balloons above the 73-mile (117- kilometer) wall, which snakes across hill and dale in northern England just south of the Scottish border.

The balloons will be fitted with lights and networked so they can communicate with one another. Viewers will be able to submit short messages which will be transformed into pulses of colored light that pass along the wall in patterns reminiscent of Morse Code.

Group member Zachary Lieberman, who is overseeing final work on the project at Newcastle University in northeast England, said Tuesday he hoped to create "the inverse of a border ... to imagine the border as a means of connection" rather than separation.

He said balloons were chosen for their ability to evoke a sense of wonder and magic.

The work will be staged the nights of Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. Visitors will be able to see stretches of the wall from spots along the route, while people around the world can watch on the Internet.

The piece is part of the London 2012 Festival, a three-month, cross-country arts extravaganza of 12,000 events staged to coincide with the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Events have ranged from a touring inflatable replica of the ancient Stonehenge monument to the world premiere of Karlheinz Stockhausen's opera "Mittwoch aus Licht" ? which features a string quartet playing from four airborne helicopters ? to a mass nationwide bell-ringing to mark the start of the Olympics on July 27.

The festival ends Sept. 9, the same day as the Aug. 29-Sept. 9 Paralympics.

In mature, competitive markets flooded with products, many brands come and go. Last week, though, two companies came to New York City to celebrate milestone anniversaries of their electronic products. Lenovo celebrated the 20th anniversary of the ThinkPad as Casio marked the 30th anniversary of the G-Shock watch. The notebook PC remains among the most versatile and complex devices consumers use today while the watch is one of the simplest. Yet some commonality between these two products may include lessons for other technology products that wish to remain around for decades.

Coalition for a Prosperous America (CPA) Comments to the USTR on Expanding Trans Pacific Partnership Talks with Canada and Mexico

The office of the USTR has requested public comment in response to Canada and Mexico's request to be part of the Trans Pacific Partnership talks.

The Coalition for a Prosperous America (CPA) submitted official comments yesterday, stating opposition to the talks until the US has a plan to balance trade.? CPA also pointed out the specific problems of Mexico?s VAT and Canada?s Goods and Services Tax, trade barriers and subsidies which hurt U.S. businesses and workers and worsen our trade deficit.

"We are concerned that the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative does not have a strategy to eliminate the trade deficit and help the U.S. become a successful trading nation," said Michael Stumo, CEO of CPA.???

"Participation in the Trans Pacific Partnership negotiations is not designed to balance U.S. trade flows. The USTR disserves the public interest by merely pursuing increased two-way trade with these countries, regardless of the balance of trade."

The CPA statements, contained in two separate letters, state that the USTR should address the distortionary impact of Mexico?s value added tax on trade. Instituted as Mexico was planning to join NAFTA, this consumption tax now operates as a 15% import tax and thus a trade barrier. Mexico?s VAT rebates also serve as a 15% export subsidy on shipments to the U.S.? The statements further stipulate that the USTR should address Canada's goods and services tax (GST) on trade. This consumption tax was increased as Canada was planning to join NAFTA, heightening its impact as an import tax and a trade barrier. Canada's GST rebates also serve as a substantial export subsidy on shipments to the U.S.

As an addendum to each of the statements, CPA submitted their 21st Century Trade Agreement Principles as a model for a functional bi or multilateral trade contract.

The Coalition for a Prosperous America is a national, non-profit organization representing the interests of 2.7 million families through agriculture, manufacturing, and labor association membership.? You can see CPA's official Canada TPP submission here.? And CPA's Mexico TPP submission here.

Dralion - A Standing Ovation | Triangle Arts and Entertainment

d1 Dralion A Standing Ovation

That?s what the production of?Cirque du Soleil?s Dralion?received on Wednesday, 8/15/12, its opening night in Raleigh?s PNC Arena. And it was well deserved. If you do not have plans for this weekend, you should definitely take your family to check out this delightful and critically-acclaimed show.

Dralion mixes components of traditional Chinese acrobatics with modern Western circus. Its name is a fusion of the ?dragon,? which symbolizes the east, and the ?lion,? which represents the west. And then there?s an additional layer ? the four elements of nature and the conflicts and balances between them. It helps that the elements are color-coded: air is blue, water is green, fire is red and earth is ochre. In the world of Dralion cultures blend, Man and Nature are one, and balance is achieved.

As with other Cirque du Soleil shows, Dralion is a feast for your senses. First and foremost, the performers were phenomenal. They were athletic, graceful and reminded me of some of the gymnasts in last week?s Olympics ? always in control, perfectly synchronized when required. Most the acts are performed with no safety nets or cables, so the timing of their routines has to be perfect. The acrobatics are unique and show off the performers? incredible talents.

Dralion Review 4 Dralion A Standing Ovation

The costumes were stunningly beautiful, eye popping in fact. According to Dralion?s publicist, Julie Desmarais, more than 16,000 feet of fabric were used to create them. The set is amazing as well, especially for a traveling show. It looks like a futuristic Chinese temple and includes a 60? x 26? wall that spans the length of the stage. It becomes a central part of the show as the artists climb and suspend themselves from it, performing amazing feats, some of which involve trampolines, where performers are literally bouncing off walls. Ms. Desmarais said it takes 18 semi-trailer trucks to transport the production from city to city.

The music in Dralion is an integral part of the show. The music is performed live at every show by six musicians who play a wide variety of instruments, including the violin, cello, percussions, drums, electric and classical guitars and keyboard. The score is heavy on Eastern rhythms but also pulls from classic rock and new age stylings and complements each act.

Dralion has all of the elements one would expect from a circus: jugglers, trampolines, balancing acts, flying acrobats and clowns, don?t forget the clowns. The Dralion clowns interact with audience throughout the show and keep the audience laughing, young and old alike. Much of their routines are slapstick and vaudeville-like.

I have seen two other Cirque du Soleil shows in Las Vegas (Myst?re and ?O?) and this one lived up to my expectations. I think it will live up to yours as well.

Dralion runs through Sunday, August 19, at the PNC Arena. For ticket information and show times, please visit:?www.cirquedusoleil.com/dralion.

Benson Henderson?s title defense, B.J. Penn vs. Rory MacDonald and ?Shogun? vs. ?Mauler? will headline UFC on Fox 5

The last two UFC on Fox 5 cards have been lackluster, and there hasn't been a title fight on the network since the UFC's debut there. UFC on Fox 5 will change those two trends. USA Today reports the next network show will be on Dec. 8 at a site to be determined.

The three fights added to the show's slate:

-- Benson Henderson will defend his lightweight heavyweight (Ed. note -- Sorry, still recovering from Olympics) belt against Nate Diaz, who is riding a three-fight win streak. Diaz earned the title shot with a submission of Jim Miller in May.

-- In the co-main event, Alexander Gustafsson will fight Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. Gustafsson has five wins in a row at light heavyweight, but has been ignored by the UFC for a title shot. Perhaps a win over Shogun, who just beat Brandon Vera on the last Fox card, will do the trick.

-- B.J. Penn and Rory MacDonald's bout, which was postponed because of a cut MacDonald sustained in training, was rescheduled to this card.

With a title fight, a possible title contender's fight and the mainstream starpower of Penn, the UFC is giving Fox a welcome change from the less-than-thrilling recent cards. Though the UFC reported an increase in ratings from their May show to the August one, it was modest. The May show also experienced a steep drop-off in ratings from the two previous shows on Fox, so the improvement shown on the August show still didn't get the UFC anywhere near the four million viewers who watched the first two UFC on Fox shows.

Will you tune in? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Dolphins cut Chad Johnson after arrest

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) -- As the Miami Dolphins took the field for practice Sunday, Chad Johnson was getting out of jail.

Hours later, he was out of work.

The Dolphins terminated the six-time Pro Bowl receiver's contract about 24 hours after he was arrested in a domestic battery case involving his wife.

Johnson was released from jail on $2,500 bond earlier Sunday after his wife accused him of head-butting her during an argument in front of their home. Johnson was charged with simple domestic battery, a misdemeanor.

The confrontation came barely a month after Johnson married Evelyn Lozada, who is on the reality TV show ''Basketball Wives.'' The 34-year-old Johnson had been battling for a spot on the team after a disappointing season with the New England Patriots in 2011.

Following Sunday's practice, coach Joe Philbin said he would meet soon with Johnson.

''We're going to deal with this,'' Philbin said before Johnson was released. ''We're not going to waste time. ... We're all in this thing together. Everybody that sets foot in this building, we're all held to a high standard.''

Only five days earlier, Philbin said Johnson's roster spot could be in jeopardy if he didn't temper his freewheeling behavior. Johnson annoyed the coach by frequently using profanity during a session with reporters.

Johnson's defense attorney, Adam Swickle, said an order has been issued that prevents Johnson from contacting Lozada. Swickle declined to comment further.

Johnson - who recently changed his name from Chad Ochocinco - was arrested Saturday after Lozada confronted him about a receipt she found for a box of condoms, police said. According to an arrest affidavit, Lozada said she was taking groceries into their home when she found the receipt in the car trunk.

When the two were seated back in the car, they began talking about the receipt and their marriage. That's when Johnson got upset and head-butted his wife, the report said.

Lozada ran to a neighbor's house and called police. A responding officer said Lozada had a 3-inch cut on her forehead, according to the affidavit, while Johnson did not have any visible marks or bruises. When questioned by police, he confirmed there was an argument over the receipt, but said his wife had head-butted him.

Even before his arrest, Johnson was battling to salvage his career. He was released by the Patriots after totaling only 15 receptions last season. He dropped the lone pass thrown his way Friday night in the Dolphins' first exhibition game.

News of the arrest spread quickly Saturday, an off day for the team.

''I was shocked,'' tight end Charles Clay said. ''Of course, you don't want things like that to happen.''

Johnson has long been known for outlandish antics that annoyed his teammates as well as coaches. Philbin, a first-year head coach, talked with his players about Johnson's arrest before the player was released.

''I reminded them that on April 10 in our first team meetings, I said, 'Guys, I'd love to stand up here and tell you we're never going to have a problem here in Miami,''' Philbin said. ''Do we want high-character guys? Yes. All 31 other coaches are going to say the same thing. But I specifically told them on April 10 that there will be problems that arise and you have to deal with them honestly and openly and directly. You've got to learn from mistakes and move on, and you can't hide from the problem.''

If convicted, Johnson faces a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $1,000 fine. He could also receive community service, probation or anger management classes.

Johnson was known as Ochocinco for the past four seasons but changed his name back to Johnson after his July 4 wedding. The name was a playful reference to his uniform No. 85.

Johnson and Lozada were prominent in the recent first episode of HBO's ''Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Miami Dolphins.''

VH1's ''Basketball Wives'' is filmed in Miami and also features Shaunie O'Neal, the former wife of former NBA star Shaquille O'Neal. Lozada is the former fiancee of NBA player Antoine Walker.

Manage your personal credit card obligations ? Choose DIY debt ...

If your personal finances have gone haywire and you?re looking for a unique solution, you should know that nothing can help you apart from managing your debts on your own. Though there are too many professional debt relief companies like the credit counseling and the?debt management?companies that can assist you in getting rid of debt, self-help is always the best help when it comes to staying out of the debt trap. If you feel vulnerable to the professional companies that may scam you, you may read the concerns of this article to check the steps that can push you out of the debt cycle.

  • Budgeting has no other substitute:?The Americans hate the B-word budgeting and this is the probable reason behind the large number of debtors in this nation. Your income is spent in many ways throughout the month and unless you keep a close track on the things on which you?re investing on your pennies, you may soon find money controlling you rather than you controlling your money if you don?t manage debt. Before you welcome this stage, you should follow a budget throughout the month.
  • Start building an emergency fund:?Irrespective of whichever step you may take in order to repay your unpaid credit card bills, you have to make timely payments to the creditors and this will only be possible when you have saved enough money. Experts always advise people to save at least 10% of what they make in a month and store in a high-yield savings account, not under their mattresses. This will ensure effective debt management.
  • Stop using your credit cards:?Stop using your credit cards as much as possible so that you may not be forced to pay the outrageously high interest rates on the cards for misusing them. Carry cash in your wallet and choose to buy those things that you really need instead of getting the things that you just want for luxury so that you can become an expert in managing your debt.
  • Know where you stand and negotiate with creditors:?Always know where you stand financially by checking the total amount that you owe. Don?t refrain from seeking help of your creditors as they can often help you take the best decision in managing your debt. Tell them about the hardship that you?re going through so that they may ease the terms and conditions for you.
  • Get help from a credit counselor:?A credit counselor is an expert who can help you with finance management and budgeting that can put you out of debt. Follow the word of a credit counselor and help yourself get out of debt sooner by enrolling in a debt management program.

Therefore, when you?re wondering about the ways in which you can opt for debt management, you may follow the above mentioned steps. Lead a debt free life and secure your financial future.
